In Gran Bretagna strutture come i comitati mancano.

English version

1) What does Fise and the situation of equestrian sport in Italy have in common with the British horse world and which are the biggest positive differences you have noticed on both sides ?

I think that there are many similarities between the situation in Italy and in Great Britain . In Italy are many people who are very passionate about their sport and this is absolutely essential for the future of the sport here. Also there already exist many good structures for the development of the sport in Italy . For example the Regional Committee structure is very important indeed. In Great Britain they do not have such a good structure. I believe that this regional structure is one of the most important keys for us to be able to develop the sport further in Italy . It is vital to work closely with the Regional Committees and with the very important people who are on those committees.

2) Which are the tasks of a “Direttore Sportivo” and the ones of “Capo Dipartimento” of single disciplines?

My role is to direct! I have to work closely with the Heads of Department, the Commissions and of course with the Regional Committees to ensuure that we have good programmes, structures and systems in place in order to develop equestrian sport in Italy .

Which are your main tasks and concerns now at Weg both in your role as “Direttore Sportivo” and “Capo Dipartimento” of Italian Dressage?

As Chef de Mission my role again is to direct. I work closely with all of the chef d’equipes and the performance management teams – vets, trainers etc in oredr to ensure that we leave no stone unturned in order to help our athletes perform to the best of their ability here.

3) Who has decided which riders and horses would be going to WEG and which criteria have inspired the decision (different for each discipline we suppose) ? Now that the teams have been named do you think the qualifying systems and the strategies used for selecting them have been efficient or have you already spotted their week links?

We have put together selection policies in April and May in order to ensure that there was an open and transparent selection process for WEG which is principally based on performance and performance potential. We will be conducting a review of the selection policies post weg as well as conducting a thourough perform review in order to see how we can build on what has been achieved this year.

4) Fise just announced that it has finally reached an agreement with Eremo del Castegno’s owners that will enaible Fise to support Eremo and it’s rider in order to allow them to prepare for the London Olympics. What sort of agreement is it and why did it take so long to make it? If it is a long term strategy, will it be one that Fise is going to use in future for other very promising horses and riders of every discipline or will it be restricted to this pair ?

I am afraid that I have not been involved in this process since I had already left for WEG.

5) Some readers have drawn our attention to the fact that you have cancelled the prizes dressage riders were getting from Fise for certain very important sportive achievements and that there is no prizemoney any longer at national dressage shows. These sort of “rewards” have been common in the past and still are for show-jumping and eventing. What is the reason for cancelling these prizes and will it stay like this next year too ?

This was a very difficult decision to take but when I arrived we had to cut all of the department budgets significantly. We had to foucs on the absolute priorities for dressage for this year such as squad training and training judges. For next year we have already started the programme review process and we will be looking at what are the essential budget issues in order to assist the development of the sport.

6) Most of the horses should have arrived in Kentucky by now. How was their trip, are they all well settled in and how is the spirit and atmosphere among the italian athletes ?

The horses all arrived well and have received excellent help from our Team of vets here. I have been very impressed with the level of horse care that has been showed to our horses during this long trip.
